They are backing off the time calculation stuff (times of the gentiles) and focusing on the composite sign, how we seeit, it has been going along for a long time so we therefore must be deep in the period of the end. It has become more subjective and loose. It give them more wiggle room. The date of 1914 is still held, but is mentioned less and less. I suspect that 7-10 years from now (1914+5) none of us will hear mention of it at all. It will just fade away from memory and reference. this past Sunday at the Watchtower study, the Brother conducting totally blew the calculation of time that leads up to 1914. Another Elder tried to pick-up the ball and blew it also. It seems that fewer and fewer are able to recite the old details of doctrine/ The times, they are, a changin'.

Quick, the elders are coming to the house! Hide that!
by bronzefist inwhat did you have to hide from the elder's sight if they came to your house?.

MY policy for sometime has been not to let them in the house. When someone visits unannounced, I open the door, say hello, explain that my wife cannot receive company right now, step outside on to the front porch, close the front door behind me and chat a little bit standing outside in the front. When at the meeting, if one of the Elders asks if he and another Brother can speak to me for a few minutes, I ask if it is a judicial matter. When they reply no it isn't, I smile and say, I would prefer not to have any private discussions. It usually ends there and has seemed to be working for quite a while.

I just went through a CO vist a little while ago. They have changed from what they used to be. Now they are much more milder and are a cheerleading session. He gives several "feel good" talks and one about dealing with persecution. A lot of commendation and "hang in there" stuff. The Ministry is emphasized, etc. If you can avoid him before and after the meeting you will be okay. If you go in service do it on Saturday morning where there will be a big turnout and he already has plans. He will leave you alone. His Wife will smile and chat with the Sisters. The Brothers who want to be appointed or want some special part on the CA, etc will get righ up front with the glad handing and the meals, etc so that kind of takes the pressure off the others.

For those still in, what makes you feel like a witness and what doesn't?
by Hermano ini've noticed when i exercise regularly i feel thin, regardless of my weight.
this led me to think about how behavior, thoughts and feelings are tied together.
so for those of you still in what activities or thoughts make you feel like a witness?

Donations = iPads?
by Emery ini had my co visit not too long ago and in our conversation on technology (i'm an apple guy) he stated that within the last year the branch supplied all traveling overseers with free ipads to use.
he then proceeded to tell me he doesnt personally bring his to the meetings as not to stumble anyone (or maybe because we might see his high score on temple run).
i was pretty surprised by this and began wondering... are jw donations towards the world wide work going to ipads for do's and co's to use in their spare time?

Its just part of the WTS moving into the 21st Century and the digital age. As covered before in this Forum, there is a clear monetary advantage to providing literature digitally along with instructions, talk outlines and other items to the local and travelling Management. It is paid for by donations to the Worldwide work. Surprise! Surprise!
A Brother in my Congo gave a local needs talk about a year and a half ago discussing that using iPads and other Tablets at the Meeting can cause an "unecessary distraction" to the "Friends" and can be an inmodest show of one's personal wealth. This was mainly because an old Brother (who has more money than the US Treasury) was bringing his iPad to the meetings and was using it. It is all he carries to the meeting. About six months later, the Brother who gave the talk shows up at the meetings with somekind of a tablet. He runs an app with a large face countdown timer and faces it towards the current speaker, so the speaker knows how much time he has left in his talk/part. I am sure that this was sanctioned by some Authority somewhere.
A year and a half ago these things were tabu, now they are being handed out for free to the Travelling Management! You can't make it up.

Ten Years From Now .......
by Phizzy inwhat with the very low baptism rate, many leaving, many waking up and staying in for now, but not "zealous" any more, the wt/jw religion/scam is without doubt moribund.. i do not foresee a sudden end to the wt but what will it look llike in ten years time ??.
the late teens/early twenty year olds of today will i think be very thin on the ground as 30 year old jw's, so my view is that in ten years time it will be mainly old hardcore ones ,50 yr old and up, and even they will be aware that the org.
is dying..

My forecast is that in the Western world, there will be many disallusioned members that just decide to quit, or fade. I think the number will be significant. It will be well past 1914+100 and nothing has happened. It will be inexplicable to try and defend.
The main points from Conventions, Assemblies and Special days will be the same as now; endurance, faith, keep in expectation, etc. If you don't, you better examine yourself. What's wrong with you.
The growth will be experienced only really in the third world and developing countries. In the western countries the membership will be in serious decline and with them the money. The contributions from the third world and developing nations will be insufficient to support the existing organization's infrastructure, so cost cutting measures will be employed. The expensive Brooklyn Heights Real Estate will all be sold-off and the move to the country complete. The tax free capital gains will be the treasure chest.
Direct references in published material and discourses to 1914 will be diminishing if not totally eliminated by then. There will still be an embargo on higher education, but that will be eased-off of publically because of the prevailing circumstances of decline. The education topic will be just internal chit-chat among the BOE when decisions of appointment are being made.
Sadly, there will be countless disappointed and disallusioned members-exmembers, all because of what they were told and read. No excuses or appologies will help, or reverse the situation. Don't bother.
The WTS will be in the process of reinventing itself, as a social organism seeking survival even if it doesn't realize it.
Thank you Fredddy Franz for all of the decades of lunatic writting and practices that put this whole thing into motion.

Was There Anything You Actually Enjoyed About Being A JW?
by MrFreeze ini'm sure this question has been raised a lot but it is always good to look back.
the last 5 or 6 years of me being a jw, i did not have a very good go of it.
one thing i actually did enjoy was going to the international convention.

Back in the 1960's, I liked the chilie that was served at the Vircuit Assemblies. Other than that, nothing.

Is the 10 Hour Per Month Requirement Still In Force?
by Conan The Barbarian inare there any active elders/ms or higher out there who can advise if one of the requirements for appointment is that the person's fs time is equal to or greater than either the congregation's average or the national average?
this used to be the case, but may have been relaxed.
also is the branch still approving appointments?
-
Conan The Barbarian
Thanks to all for the input. I know for a fact that as late as 2006, MS/Elders/Pioneers wold not be appointed if they had less than 10 hours per month in FS, or had somekind of extenuating circumstances. I think that this has been relaxed in recent years to get more of the bystander men involved.
